C&K’s microminiature SMT side actuated switch extends operating life, reduces footprint

C&K Components has developed a new SMT side actuated switch series that increases operating life while reducing the footprint. The microminiature PTS 840 Series switch is available with front PIP leads that deliver strong shear resistance and higher reliability than other technologies.

Combining small size, an extended life span of up to 100,000 cycles, and an optional ESD pin, the PTS 840 Series switch is suitable for inclusion in a variety of systems where PCB space is limited, including nomad devices, remote controls, personal health diagnostic systems, and consumer electronics applications.

The SMT side actuated switch measures a slim 3.5mm x 3.55mm with a travel path of 0.2mm + 0.2mm / -0.1mm. The momentary action of PTS 840 Series switch with J-, G-, and front PIP-type terminals can withstand contact resistances of under 500mohms and insulation resistances of over 100mohms.

“As the market trends for mobile devices and consumer electronics move to increasingly smaller, more compact products, our miniaturized switches can now achieve even more design functionality in a smaller package,” said Jerome Smolinski, C&K senior product manager. “Also, within personal health diagnostic and monitoring systems, these smaller designs can be made less intrusive, and more functions can be controlled within a single structure.”

C&K has extensive experience incorporating custom graphics, logos, textures and finishes onto the critical surfaces that are important to the end user, Smolinski explained. Through the use of two-shot molding, paint and laser etch, pad printing, and plating processes, these decorative switches are designed to stand out. The PTS 840 Series switches exhibit a bounce time of less than 10ms and an operating temperature of -40ºC to 85ºC.
