In recent days, Nexperia - the Dutch based semiconductor firm (owned by Wingtech) has been at the centre of government intervention by both the Netherlands and China.

Following an emergency hearing, the Dutch Enterprise Chamber determined that there are valid reasons to doubt the sound management of Nexperia. This led to the Dutch Government activating rarely used powers under the Availability of Goods Act and taking control of the company in order to protect the European supply of semiconductors.

In response to this, the Chinese government has issued an export control notice that prohibits Nexperia China and its subcontractors from exporting specific finished components and subassemblies manufactured in China.

While the timelines for these restrictions remain unclear, it is vital that procurement teams remain proactive and mitigate disruption wherever possible. 

The immediate impacts lie in supply chain stress, a surge in orders/stockpiling, cost inflation, and the need for product redesign. Unsurprisingly, orders for Nexperia components surged in the days following these announcements, the rush to secure inventory is well underway, driving margins and costs upward.
